Feed People

More than 16% of U.S. households with children are food insecure. The USDA defines food insecurity as households that are “uncertain of having, or [are] unable to acquire enough food to meet the needs of all their members because they [have] insufficient money or other resources for food.”

Local food banks are essential to providing food to the over 42 million Americans with insufficient food security. Fresh produce is an expensive and essential part of any diet. Donating the excess produce from your garden to your local food bank is an excellent way to mitigate America's hunger problem.

Save the Planet

The recent United Nations IPCC report has indicated dire circumstances for the planet as early as 2040. According The New York Times it 'describes a world of worsening food shortages and wildfires, and a mass die-off of coral reefs as soon as 2040 — a period well within the lifetime of much of the global population.'

Yet there is a way to not just sequester current greenhouse gas emissions but reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. From a 2016 article in Scientific American:

‘Global soils already hold three times as much carbon as exists in the atmosphere, and there’s room for much more. According to a recent study in Nature, enhanced carbon storage in the world’s farmland soils could reduce greenhouse gas concentrations by between 50 and 80 percent.’
